This type of fly is categorized to the harmful species. It is a pest because it causes danger and pain. The horse flies which are very active during the day are feed on nectar and pollen. However, it has the mouth that works like a scissor to cut open surfaces while it is feeding. Its mouth will leave the scar on human skin, and it feels painful too. The types of flies that bite and leave a painful effect can be recognized from its color, for example, the horse fly is black to dark brown. It also has green or black eyes.

It produces larva which takes 7 to 12 days to hatch. This fly is also known as “Blow Fly,” and it can be found easily around dirty stuff. For example, it loves to feed on pet feces, dead animals and garbage. That is why the blow fly is called as the disease carrier. You should be careful of this fly not because of its bites, but what it brings to you bacteria and disease.

The cluster fly loves quiet places like your home’s attics and wall voids because they need to stay warm. More importantly, they seek warm places for hibernation during winter. Another difference between the cluster fly and the blow fly is what attract them. If the blow fly is attracted to hazardous things like feces and garbage, the cluster is attracted to light on sunny winter days. That is why you will be most likely to see a group of cluster fly scattered on your window screen.

Things are named after their appearance and behavior. Like this little guy, the sand fly is named after its home—sandy riverbanks. Sand fly that lives on sand riverbanks can be seen from April to September. The females sand flies are busy during this period because they need to lay eggs on damp soil or even in the water, like their friends, mosquitos.

These types of flies are 10-11 mm long, which is quite big for a fly. The sand flies have pale grey color and bronze-brown eyes with dark reddish-brown legs. According to information, types of flies are rarely biting when they are not provoked.
